Puntius Titteya (Deraniyagala, 1929)

English Name - Cherry Barb
Sinhala Name - ලේ තිත්තියා

Puntius Titteya.
An endemic fish species distributed  in the wet zone of Southern and western provinces of Sri Lanka. The  Cherry barbs are recorded from shaded , slow flowing, shallow streams with the muddy and leaf litter substratum and prefers areas with submerged aquatic vegetation. small numbers of the species are exported in the aquarium trade (Gunasekara, 2011). The  Cherry barb is listed as an Endangered fish species in the National red list 2012

Pethia nigrofasciata (Gunther, 1868)

English Name - Black Ruby Barb
Sinhala Name - බුලත් හපයා / මනමාලයා

An endemic fish species ditsributed  in low wet zone of Southern and western provinces of sri lanka.The Black ruby barb prefers clear , shaded and shallow streams with rocky / sand substrata. It lives within marginal aquatic vegetation. The Black ruby barb is a popular species in the aquarium trade. It is  considered to be among the top five exported endemic fish species in sri lanka (Gunasekara, 2011 ). The Black ruby barb is listed an endangered species  in the national red list 2012.

English Name - Flying Bird / Bearded Rasbora
Sinhala Name - රැවුල් දණ්ඩියා

Esomus thermoicos
An endemic fish species distributed in both wet and dry lowlands of Sri lanka. Flying Birds recorded from wide variety of habitats such as tanks, irrigation canals, rivers, streams and paddy fields. They prefer areas with moderately flowing waters with aquatic vegetation. The sexes are similar in appearance.The Flying Bird is listed as a least concern species in the national red list 2012.

Channa ara (Deraniyagala, 1945)

English Name - Giant Snakehead
Sinhala Name - අරා / ගංඟරා


Giant Snakehead
An endemic, rare fish species recorded from both wet and dry-zones of low land. Recent study found only few specimens from the wet zone of southern and western Sri Lanka. Adult Giant snakehead can grow over meter long and prefers and deep pools in large rivers. The sexes are similar in apperance. The Giant Snakehead is listed as an Endangered species in the national red list 2012.

Sinhala Name - උඩ හඳයා / ඉරි හඳයා

An endemic fish species ditsributed  in low wet zone of southwesten sri lanka. This species inhabit shallow , shaded slow flowing freshwater stream and prefers areas with aquatic vegetation. Large numbers of  Werner' s Killifish exported in the aquarium trade (Gunasekara ,2011 ).Werner' s Killifish listed as an Endangered species in the national red list 2012.

Anabas testudineus (Bloch, 1975)

English Name - Climbing Perch
Sinhala Name - කාවයියා / පොල් කාවයියා  


An indigenous fish species distributed in lowlands of went and dry zones in Sri Lanka.
Climbing Perch recorded from wide variety of habitats ranging from clear water streams to polluted urban canals. This fish uses pelvic fin spines to wiggle in ground during heavy rain that led to its name "Climbing Perch". The sexes are similar in appearance. That is a popular fish for human consumption and listed as a Least Concern species in the national red list 2012.
